Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park
Petaluma
Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park preserves the headquarters of General Mariano Vallejo’s 66,000-acre Rancho Petaluma. The massive two-story adobe building gives kids a tangible connection to California history.
What Kids Experience
The Adobe Building
Explore rooms set up as they would have been in the 1840s:
- Kitchen with period tools
- Sleeping quarters
- Weaving room
- Storage areas
Farm Animals
Sheep, chickens, and other animals roam the grounds, just as they did in the rancho era.
Hands-On Activities
On weekends, docents often lead activities like:
- Candle making
- Leather working demonstrations
- Adobe brick making
- Traditional crafts
Living History
The park hosts special events throughout the year with costumed interpreters, traditional music, and period activities. Check their calendar for:
- Living History Days
- Sheep shearing events
- Harvest festivals
Practical Tips
- Only open weekends - plan accordingly
- Bring a picnic - nice grounds for lunch
- Wear walking shoes - gravel paths
- Combine with a trip to nearby Petaluma
Educational Value
This is hands-on California history. Kids can touch things, walk through rooms, and see how people actually lived. Much more engaging than reading about it in a book.
